The basic system is called 'Bells Only'. In the event of alarm activation, a bell or siren will sound alerting you and your neighbours that there is an intrusion, and acting as a deterrent to the intruder.

When the alarm is activated, the bell will sound and the alarm will also send a signal via the telephone network to an alarm receiving centre. Depending upon the signal received, operators contact you, nominated key-holders or the Police to alert them to the problem.
Wireless alarm systems are quicker and easier to install but they don't scale to meet the requirements of some large premises.
